Hints for an Entertaining Kids’Party

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

The key to any successful party for children is to keep them entertained. Here are two ideas to help you plan a party for children. The first idea is an interesting and educational story about one of the most popular toys every created. It concerns President Theodore Roosevelt and how his compassion led to the creation of the teddy bear.

Theodore Roosevelt, nicknamed “Teddy” was the 26th president of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Once, on a hunting trip to Mississippi, he was asked to shoot a black bear that had been captured by his hunting partners and tied to a tree. He told the other hunters that it would not be sporting to shoot an animal that had already been captured.

His display of sportsmanship was portrayed in numerous newspaper cartoons and became part of his public image. Toymaker Morris Michtom created a plush bear cub and sold it as “Teddy’s bear.” Not only is the teddy bear popular here in the United States, but is sold all over the world under the same name.

This story is both educational and interesting, and it is sure to capture children’s imagination, since every kid has heard of the teddy bear! You can use a toy soldier, like G.I. Joe, and a realistic stuffed bear as visual aids to help you act out the stories. You can even give the kids some crayons and paper so that they can make their own cartoon depicting the famous scene.

Tell the children to imagine that they are newspaper reporters covering this historic story. If you need another visual aid, one of the original newspaper editorial cartoons is reproduced on Wikipedia and can be printed easily. Your party is sure to be a hit if you give each of the kids a small teddy bear as a prize that they can play with and keep!

A second fun activity for a kids’ party is the boardwalk of carnival games. Just keep the games simple and easy, but challenging enough to give each child a sense of accomplishment. To start, you should choose a few rooms in your home that are appropriate for playing. Then select some games and gather your materials.

Here are several carnival games that are easy enough for kids, but still provide some challenge. The first idea is a basketball game. Get a wall hoop that sticks on any surface and place a line on the floor which the contestants should stand behind when throwing. Be sure to use a soft ball! Another idea is the fishbowl game. Get different sized containers, such as a mixing bowl or a wastebasket, and put them close to each other. Using a soft ball, let each child try tossing it into the opening of their choice.

The smaller the container, the better the prize. A third game is bowling. Get some plastic pins and a soft ball and let the kids have a certain number of tries to knock down the most pins.

Choosing good prizes for the games is a key to making this work. Everyone should get a prize so that no one’s feelings are hurt. The prizes for the best scores for each game could include a stuffed animal, like a plush tiger or lion, or a kid’s book. Runners-up could receive crayons, stickers, small plush toys, or candy.

So now you have two ideas for a great kids’ party. Carnival games and the historic story of the origin of the teddy bear. The kids are not only sure to have a great time, but they can each have a stuffed animal souvenir to remember the fun they had at the party. You may find yourself having as much fun as the children!

The Rising Need for Child Care

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Unlike past decades, it isn’t uncommon today for a modern household to have two working parents providing income for the family. As a result, the need for child day care has risen drastically in the past decade. A major concern for many parents is obtaining affordable, quality day care for children, especially for young children under the age of five.

According to the United States Department of Labor, the child day care industry is one of the fastest growing in the U.S. economy. Three main types of day care make up the industry: center-based care, family child care, and private household care.

Center-based care includes day care centers, preschools, child care centers, and Head Start centers. They focus on providing a foundation for young preschool aged children before they begin their traditional schooling.

Generally there are several adults working in the center-based care facilities, overseeing larger groups of children. Some adults may work as basic care workers, watching over the basic needs of the child. Others work as teachers, teaching the children basic skills. Many parents prefer the formal learning environment of center-based care.

Family child care providers make up the majority of self-employed workers in this industry. They specialize in providing for children in their own homes for a fee, sometimes with small groups of children or often there are multiple adults with larger groups of children working in the home. Though this arrangement does provide convenience for a family child care provider, it is also important that the home is suitable and accommodating to young children.

Private household care consists of babysitters and nannies. Babysitters are paid on an hourly basis. Though nannies may be employed on an hourly basis as well, generally they are often considered live-in care for children and are paid on a weekly or monthly basis. Nannies may care for children from birth to age twelve, taking care of nutrition, health, and early education in the child’s own home while parents are working.

Many parents prefer the stability of in-home learning and care-taking that a nanny makes possible. Many reputable nanny placement services make it possible for parents to find a safe and reliable choice for their child’s care.

Employment opportunities in child day care are available across the country, though day care centers may be harder to find in rural areas. According to the United States Department of Labor, child care services provided 807,000 wage and salary jobs in 2006. These availability of these jobs continue to rise as the number of working adults in U.S. households increase.

Photo Calendars For Father’s Day

Monday, April 6th, 2009

With Father’s day fast approaching, we suggest a few ideas for making gifts that will raise a big smile. Of course, the best presents are the personal ones, so we take photos as a starting point for creating some father’s day favourites. We also understand that the days of pritt stick and scrap books are becoming a thing of the past, and as such offer a variety of ideas that can be modified with the use of computer software and the latest digital technology.

One of our favourites is creating photo calendars. This can be a 12 page calendar with a photo on every page, a desk top calendar with a special photo for every week of the year, or it can be a yearly calendar with a montage of images that are reminders of favourite places, people and pets.

Digital cameras offer a great deal of flexibility when it comes to taking pictures, and depending on the age of the child it is often the best option if you want to save money. Digital photography means that anyone can take hundreds of pictures, and choose the best of the bunch. With little ones, this is ideal as they get a chance to experiment and to view the fruits of their efforts before they make a final choice.

Digital photos can either be printed out at home and glued onto a homemade calendar, or developed on photographic paper at a processing shop for a more traditional look. If you want to provide something incredibly spectacular, with a professional edge, getting a personalised photo calendar printed could be just the answer, especially for older children who are nurturing their photographic talents.

However, seeing the world from a kid’s point of view makes for an unusual and exciting experience, especially toddlers. In this case, we highly recommend ditching editing the digital pictures, alternatively get out an old 35mm film camera, or even a Polaroid. This way, the budding young photographer can be allocated a set number of shots and what is taken is what gets printed on the photo calendar.

Encourage some direction when it comes to choosing subjects; the family pet, favourite toys, brothers and sisters for example will all make good additions to a photo calendar for Father’s Day. Once printed up, this child’s eye view of the world will be a token of affection as well as a treasured gift.

Respecting the Dead: When to Remove Flowers from a Gravesite

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

It’s quite customary in nearly every culture, to place flowers at a gravesite during the funeral. At the actual service, it’s not uncommon for a large number of people to bring flower arrangements and the family may also have a funerary wreath or arrangement created to remember their loved one. The question remains, however, when to actually remove these flowers.

Cemetery Rules

It’s important to follow the rules of the cemetery first of all. If they don’t allow flowers to remain after the funeral, then it’s a good idea to know this ahead of time. You can ask people to refrain from bringing floral arrangements and make sure that you remove the funerary wreath when you leave.

Some cemeteries have rules as to how many flowers can be placed on a grave or whether or not they have to be on the name plate. Check with your graveyard before making any decisions about flowers to find out what the rules are so you can pass them on to others.

Cut Flower Removal

For cut flowers, a week after the funeral is a good time to start removing them. At this point, the flowers will be fading and dying. Many cemeteries will have a staff that automatically removes dying flowers, but in some cases, you may want to do this yourself. Many people will show up after the funeral to bring flowers, so these might not be in bad shape yet. However, unless you want to be continuously returning to dispose of the blooms that have died, then it’s better to remove them at the one week point. If you aren`t up to the task or don’t want to return to the grave at this point, then have someone else go in your place, or find out if the cemetery will get rid of any dead and dying flowers.

In the case of excessive flowers, you can remove any extras immediately after the funeral, once people have gone. This is fairly common when the number of floral arrangements have spilled off the gravesite and onto the lawn. Since most cemeteries don’t allow this, you’ll need to get rid of any extra flower arrangements. Simply rearrange the ones on the grave so that the best or most sentimental blooms are still there and then take the rest away.

It’s acceptable to remove large showy arrangements from the grave immediately after the wedding, particularly if the flowers are not in a vase. Keeping them fresh for as long as possible by placing flowers in vases will ensure they still look decent a week later when you return to remove them.

Artificial Flower Removal

Many people opt for fake or silk flowers since they will last longer, but these aren’t going to stand up to years of weather unscathed. These artificial flowers are often not allowed in more modern cemeteries, so be sure you check the regulations beforehand.

While artificial flowers certainly help keep a grave cheerful for longer, these, too, need to be removed after a time. This type of flower can be left longer, but as soon as it shows signs of becoming dirty or bedraggled, usually a couple of months after the funeral, it’s time to retire the flowers.

It’s best to clear away any old flowers on a regular basis after the funeral, to keep the grave neat and tidy. Adding fresh new flowers to the gravesite from time to time will ensure that your deceased loved one is remembered and the removal of any old or dying flowers is simply a respectful thing to do.

Anorexic Teenagers Can Overcome Their Eating Disorder And Empower Their Life

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Teen anorexia is characterized by a significant weight loss resulting from excessive dieting. Most teen anorexic girls and an increasing number of teenage boys are motivated by the strong desire to be thin and a fear of becoming obese.

Anorexic teens consider themselves to be fat, no matter what their actual weight is. Often teen
anorexics do not recognize they are underweight and may still “feel fat” at 80 lbs.

Teen anorexics close to death will show you on their bodies where they feel they need to lose weight. In their attempts to become even thinner, the teenage anorexic will avoid food and taking in calories at all costs, which can result in death. An estimated 10 to 20% will eventually die from complications related to it.

Teen anorexics usually strive for perfection. These teenagers set very high standards for themselves and feel they always have to prove their competence. The teen anorexic usually always puts the needs of others ahead of their own needs.

A teenage girl or boy with anorexia may also feel the only control they have in their lives is in the area of food and weight.

If they can’t control what is happening around them, they can control their weight. Each morning the number on the scale will determine whether or not they have succeeded or failed in their goal for thinness.

They feel powerful and in control when they can make themselves lose weight. Sometimes focusing on calories and losing weight is their way of blocking out feelings and emotions.

For teenagers, it’s easier to diet then it is to deal with their problems directly. Teen anorexics usually have low self-esteem and sometimes feel they don’t deserve to eat. Teenage anorexics usually deny that anything is wrong. Hunger is strongly denied.

They usually resist any attempts to help them because the idea of therapy is seen only as a way to force them to eat. Once these teens admit they have a problem and are willing to seek help, they can be treated effectively through a combination of psychological, nutritional and medical care.

At Tollie’s Out of the Darkness Project strive to empower teenage anorexics. Creating a positive
and fast mental shift from lack of control to complete empowering control.

Teen anorexia so many times is seen as only the goal of being thin. However, mentally there is a goal of confidence, control, and beauty.
